The Great Flounder Expedition

WOW what a blast it was to go out on our very own tamaki estuary to catch baby flounders. Why are we catching baby flounders you ask? Well the fish population is decreasing because more and more greedy people seem to catch fish and put them in stores to sell or even just take it home with them and cook it. But the flounder team and I weren't doing that, we were catching baby flounders to put them into our school fish tank. We saw that the fish numbers were decreasing so by catching fish and putting them into our tank, they will have a better chance of surviving.

How long will we be keeping them for? We will be keeping the flounders up until the are and adult and then we can release them, then they will have a better chance of surviving. How many did we catch? Well we caught more than 50 baby flounders but we could only keep 12 in our tank and the rest were put back into the ocean, but 9 had been given to Kauri Flats school because they only had caught 4. How did we feel before, during and after? Before we went out into the water we had did a karakia (Prayer) we all felt excited and amazing that we had the chance to go out and save the fish. During while we were pulling the net along the surface the whole of Pt England had walked down to watch us for a bit and sing a waiata/himene and while they were singing I felt the energy come from them and all the blessings and thoughts that were going on. The aftermath was incredible because we caught so much flounders, a bit of sardines, crabs and a lot of rocks and shells.

Who were involved? Well there was Roimata, Aysha, Aliyah, Daniella, Lyi Sorn, Angel, John Armour, Justus, Angelo, Isaac, Hosea, Whaea Saf, Tyson, Peter, Sarah, Mr Vogt, Mr Somerville, Mr Jacobsen and myself (Danielle). What did we do with the fish? Well we took the fish back to school and chose the decent sized ones and put them into our tank, and the rest went back into the awa (River) and some went to Kauri Flats school. How did you feel at the end of the day? I felt exhausted and so did everyone else because pulling the net was heavy and a bit difficult because we were sinking into the sand.

Also on behalf of the flounder team we would like to say a massive thanks to all the helpers and mostly to peter for flying all the way to Auckland (NZ) just to help us with our expedition and also lending us your fishing net (He only had 2 hours of sleep because of his flight here, that's why he is amazing. If you don't know who Peter is he is a professional at fish (which means he knows a lot about fish, how to catch them and lots of interesting facts about all the different types of fish there are. So that was our wonderful adventure and everyone needs to keep our awa clean and not be so greedy for fish and other sea animals/creatures.

Cross Country

WALT: show not tell.
The day has come our school cross country. My body was quivering and my head heating up as if it was going to burst into flames. I breathe in and out trying to calm myself down.
I felt like I was going to melt as my legs were not powerful enough to hold myself up.

At the start line I am ready in my position to run. I feel like a panther ready to attack my prey and the others are too. “ Clap” and were off. We run and run as if our prey as gotten away. The other girls run like they are having a race to have each other's territory.

How our muscles work

You are probably thinking now how our muscles need to work, what makes them function. Your journey starts here. Read on for more about “How our MUSCLES work.”

The way our muscles work is that our Tendons are cords made of tough tissue, they work as special connector pieces between bone and muscle. The tendons are attached so well that when you contract one of your muscles, the tendon and bone move along with it. Skeletal muscles come in many different sizes and shapes to allow them to do many types of jobs.

Did you know you have more than 600 muscles in your body? They do everything from pumping blood throughout your body to helping you lift your heavy backpack. You control some of your muscles, while others like your heart do their jobs without you thinking about them at all.
The strong and prolonged contraction of a muscle during exercise causes sooner or later muscle fatigue. Fatigue increases while the glycogen stored in the muscles decreases. Muscle fatigue is something you get often when you exercise.
So that is how our muscles work and what it takes and needs to function. Click here to check out more information about how our muscles work

Write4Gold Poster

WALT: Identify and present facts of greater importance from a non fiction text

Last week's work was about a true story Write4Gold. It was about teams from around the world to compete in a Write4Gold competition. The main thing was to showcase their talent to everyone and to express what art/graffiti is all about. The judges wanted " Zero Tolerance." What I've learnt from this is to do teamwork, showcase your talent and to make right decisions when it come down to one person.

Year 7 fun week

The day on camp all year 8s were gone except for a few year 8s they stayed back with us year 7s. On our first of year 7 fun day we had the chance to do art and become apart of a management team. We made the poles in our block decorative and colourful to welcome the year 8s back when they arrive on the last day of school. On our second day we were fundraising for a shared lunch that our year 7s and some year 8s wanted to do on the last day of term 1. We fundraised $54.60 at first.

Our last day we were super excited to have freedom in the holidays. On our last day we raised up to $97.29 and it was enough to buy all the ingredients. We had a kitchen team that would make the food and prepare everything. Our first day went alright as we had some issues of tidying up and preparing all the flower art so that it was ready for the year 8s to feel welcomed home.

We even got to watch a movie and it was called From boys2Men filmed by Mrs Muliaumaseali'i and her "One pacific production team." We only got to watch half of it but watched the rest on our second to last day. The movie was about a boy named Malaga that lived in a foster home with a very bad foster parent. He was threatened by that foster parent and was told that if he ever went to sleep again his knuckles would be broken. Malaga then ran away on the streets and was found by a teenager named Johno. Johno then took him in and looked after him until he was all grown up.

As Malaga was an adult he started to steal with his best friend Johno and their crew. Malaga and Johno were locked up but then Malaga had a social worker and his social worker took him in to be his son. He went to college as Johno tried to find Malaga. " Is that you Johno," cried Malaga. " Johno it is you."
" Malaga you need to come with me," explained Johno. " It's nothing personal we need you back brother."
The ending is sad but luckily it's just an act. Malaga dies at the end and the strange thing is that Malaga's friend Johno was taken in by the same people. Malaga's social worker.

Our last day was the best day yet. We had lizania, a pear and a can of coke. The last day but it was a blast. Everyone had fun and there were smiles. That was our year 7 fun week. Also a couple of year 8s to look after and lead us.

Our Immersion Assembly

YAH!, school is here. We are now back at school to learn, create and share our awesome creativity things we do in class. At out first immersion assembly for this term was all about art. Team 1’s movie was about all their favourite things. Team 2’s Item and movie was about all the different seasons there are. Winter, Summer, Spring and Autumn were all four choices to pick from. Team 3 was about Architecture building. Team 4 was about Teacher avengers. They were going to look at different kinds of comic books and create their own. Team 5 was about All 4 Waka’s: Hikianalia, Hokulea, Te Aurere and Hine Moana.

Team 5’s act was pretty cool, even Mrs Tele’a was awesome and her doing her funny act pretending to paddle. The music on team 4s movie was a superhero themed song in action movies usually. Mr Goodwin was the narrator. He talked as if they had made a real comic book movie.  Team 2s learning was based on the different kinds of seasons there are. Bright colours are for summer, dark colours like red for autumn, Winter is mostly white and blue then spring are any types of colours.

Team 1,2 and 3 didn’t were really any costumes but there message was to build or use all types of lovely colours of the seasons, trying to think what you like and to do architecture. Team 4 teacher Mr Somerville was dressed as Captain America. Team 5s teachers were dressed in our house colours which are Hikianalia (yellow), Hine Moana (blue), Hokulea (green) and Te Aurere (red). They are our house colours named after the 4 waka’s.

What I liked about team 1s item was they were sharing their favourite things about what they really like in their lives. Team 2s item was learning about the different colours in the different seasons like WInter, Spring, Summer and Autumn and that was interesting. Teams 3s one was super interesting and cool because they are doing architecture building in there class. Team 4s one was pretty hilarious as for there superhero names with a very very bad villain. Then we come down to team 5s item. It was pretty funny because they were pretending they were actually racing in their waka. Hine Moana was Mrs Tele’a was coming first then Hokulea Mrs Garden took the lead and won. This was our first 2016 Immersion assembly. JUst to be clear I think Mrs Tele'a actually won fare in square.

Our Aspiration talkers

Today in the year 7 and 8 block we got to meet Arizona and Kenese. They worked at different jobs but explained there passion and encouragement for all of us year 7 and 8's.  Their talk was for us to learn on what they are trying to say.

They both came and spoke about Aspiration, Inspiration and Motivation. It was to encourage us and making us confident in what we do now
and in the future.

Kenese talk was based on how our parents look after us feed us, cleaned after us and also watched over us as we grow. He also talked about part of his life and said " Honor your family as they honor you." As for Arizona her talk was based on how she got to work in many different places at other jobs. She also had to earn her Mickey mouse ear.

The things that I will learn from there talk is encouragement, happiness, dreaming big, working hard, making right decisions even if you have to give up something small and honoring your family. What i will learn from Kenese is taking care of my parents as they take care of me and make right decisions.

What I will learn from Arizona's talk is happiness, work hard and dreaming big. If you have a dream don't not try accomplish it, try to accomplish it.  She also talked about her accomplishing different jobs that she worked at.

Arizona and Kenese had different lives but almost talked about the same thing which means that they have both been through some of the stuff that we mostly know about. They really helped us about AIM which stands for  Aspiration
            Inspiration
           Motivation
They really have encouraged us with their little talk which was about there lives and also what we should do now, back then and in the future. This was their talk that they have shared to inspire us at this aged and as how we grow up to be teenagers then adults. Learning off them was great and was a awesome opportunity to learn about themselves which we get to know them better.

Using correct punctuation

WALT: punctuate sentences correctly.
This week we are learning on how to use our punctuation correctly in our writing. Punctuation are . ? " " ! or , that you use before closing off a speech. When using speech marks you have to have some sort of punctuation before closing it off. For an example- " Hey John I'm gonna go to the store to pick up some bread," said Bryan. " 10 minutes will do." So as you can see at the end of bread I put a comma beacsue John was still gonna talk. A full stop at the end of do is when he stops talking and walks away.

The Lost Statues of the Muntabs

WALT: think from the characters point of view.
Lost statues of the Muntabs
In a old camp site there was Anthony and Murray. Anthony and Murray were best friends but wanted to explore instead of sitting in one place 24/7. “Hey Anthony,” whispered Murray, “Do you want to go out on a trip.” Anthony’s heart was burned from his body, His eyes filled with tears and he rushed out as quick as a cheetah.

“What would I do to keep Anthony away from dangerous things in the swamp,” panicked Murray. “ Could I lure him in with something.” In search of Anthony he found a statue, but not a normal statue of people. “ Anthony,” shouted Murray “I found something.”Where abouts are you” ” I’m over here.” As it turned night, the shine of the moon came down like a light from heaven. The light shined down at the statue, while the full moon passes.

It was a lost statue of the ancient Muntabs. Muntabs were ancient warriors that were first born into the world. In the distance were more statues. Moonlight shines on water, statues and the beautiful shine of water as the crescent moon shines way up in the sky. As Anthony finally found Murray they started to discover things that have never been revealed before.

While they were digging for interesting artifacts they thought about handing them in to the university for museums.“We have only found 28 Muntabs statues let’s find more!” Exclaimed Anthony. “ It’s enough,” replied Murray. “We don’t need any more let’s leave some for others to discover.” So off they went with artifacts about the Muntabs and travelled away from the light of the moon.

They had got back from travelling in private property while they heard howls coming from each sides of them 1 howl, 2 howl and 3 howls. “Hey look we are finally back,” mumbled Murray. “ What a day of relic finding.” They made their way back in their tent.Falling asleep slowly another howl was heard in the distance. Anthony woke up. In a rush “Murray.” screamed Anthony as he was frightened by such noise outside.

“Ahhhhhhh,” shouted Murray with his heart pounding as if he was going to faint. “ You almost scared me to death, what's wrong.” Murray whispered angrily.
“There, there are Muntabs.” said Anthony shivering cold.
“There is no such thing as Muntabs alive,” replied Murray. “ Now go back to sleep.”
So as they went back to sleep Anthony felt better that there were no Muntabs.
